trail |
Despite chilly weather on December 10, a total of eighteen girl scouts
from Columbia River Girl Scout troops 1311(12 scouts) and 785 (6
scouts) along with troop leaders and parents and Moonshadow Park
neighbors planted 200 native plants along the park trail, in riparian
and upland areas in under TWO HOURS! All of us are amazed
by the power of Girls Scouts! This planting is part of the Moonshadow
Park restoration plan in which neighbors, Tualatin Hills Park and Recreation
District, Tualatin Watershed Council, SOLV, Clean Water Services and other
basin partners are working together to restore the park. The plan
includes removing invasive plant species, planting native plants and assisting
the native plants in reclaiming the area in which blackberries and ivy
had taken over.
The plants will help shade out invasive plant species such as Himalayan
blackberry, bindweed, morning glory, English ivy and other species and
provide shade along the stream and decrease high summer time temperatures
as well as provide nutrients for aquatic life such as fish and stream
insects.
